Hussain, Atherton lead England's fightback

Captain Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton batted steadily as England made a strong reply to South Africa's first innings score of 450 in the second Test at Port Elizabeth today.

At stumps on the second day, England were 138 for 1, with Hussain batting on 69 and Atherton on 58.

The duo put on a 138-run partnership after opener Mark Butcher fell after scoring only four with the score on five. He was bolwed by Shaun Pollock in the second over of the innings.

Earlier, Lance Klusener hit a brilliant 174 as South Africa posted the highest score at St George's Park. Klusener's hundred, his second, came in 196 minutes off 127 balls. His previous highest score was 102 versus India.
