Indian women held: Asia Cup

India were held to a 2-2 draw by Japan in their third match in the Hero Honda fourth women's Asia Cup Hockey tournament in Delhi today.

In another match, defending champions South Korea downed Malaysia 5-1

The Indians began well and in the fourth minute created a move from the left and earned a penalty-corner. From the push, Marystella Tirkey relayed the ball to captain Sita Gussain, who put her team one up.

India continued too dominate but without any success. Japan restored parity three minutes from half-time from a penalty-corner. Keiko Miura's direct hit found the net after being deflected by Indian goalkeeper Tingonlemia.

In the second half too, the Indians controlled the game but found it difficult to splinter through the crowded Japanese defence. It was only in the 42nd minute that their efforts bore fruit when Manjinder Kaur was obstructed in the striking circle. Off the resultant penalty-corner, Pritam Rani deflected home (2-1).

Japan fought back and levelled for the second time in the 57th minute. Toshie Tsukui made a solo run from the centre towards the Indian goal but was fouled by the Indian goalkeeper who fell on the ball. A penalty-stroke was awarded and captain Kumi Matsui made no mistake.
