Sehwag, Nayar in record stand

A sparkling 274 by Virender Sehwag and an unbeaten 115 by Rajib Nayar helped North Zone post an imposing total of 551 for six in their first innings on the second day of the five-day Duleep Trophy quarter-final match against South Zone at the Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium, Agartala, today.

North, powered by a record 381-run fourth wicket partnership between Sehwag and Nayar, toyed with the South bowling. Their work was made easier by some poor fielding which saw ten catches being dropped.

Earlier in 1995-96, West Zone's Amol Mazumdar and Abhijeet Kale had made 285 runs against North Zone at Indore.

Resuming at the overnight score of 229 for four, North added 322 runs today, losing two more wickets.

Sehwag's record 274 was studded with 36 hits to the fence and four sixes. He faced 327 balls in his 416-minute stay at the crease before wicketkeeper S Siruguppi stumped him off Venkatapathy Raju with the team's total 530.

Vijay Dahiya followed him to the pavilion after scoring just eight.

North's other successful batsman Nayar's unbeaten 115 had 11 hits to the fence. It came in a record 590 minutes from 456 balls.
