Indian lifters shine at Asian meet

India has so far bagged eight medals, including two silver and six bronze, at the ongoing Asian Weightlifting Championships in Wu Han in China.

According to information received by veteran lifter P. K. Mahanand, in the senior women's 48 kgs event, Sanamacha Chanu claimed a silver and a bronze with a total lift of 172.5 kgs. She lifted 97.5 kgs in jerk to win the silver and 75 kgs in snatch claim the bronze.

China's Li Zhou, who set three World records with a total lift of 195 kgs, won the category.

Debutante Shandhya won three bronze medals in the 48 kgs junior category. She had a total of 150 kgs, lifting 65 kgs in snatch and 85 kgs in jerk.

In the men's category, T Mithu claimed two bronze medals in the 56 kgs event. He lifted 112.5 kgs in the snatch and 140 kgs in jerk for a total of 240 kgs.

According to Wg Cdr P.K. Mahanand, though the Indian lifters have done well so far at the championships, their performance failed to match the results of 1995 Asian Championship at Pusan (South Korea), where Kunjarani and Karnam Malleswari won a gold each.

Malleswari had won the gold again at the 1997 Asian Championship at Yangzhou, where Kunjarani bagged a silver.
