Pak president on notice in PCB case

Pakistan President Rafiq Tarar has been served notice by the Lahore High Court, asking him to explain why he had suspended the Pakistan Cricket Board and appointed an ad hoc committee to run cricket affairs in that country.

Tarar and five others named on the basis of a petition filed by the Lahore Cricket Association have been given till Tuesday to respond to the notice.

The Pakistan cricket association's constitution gives the patron -- which in this case is Tarar -- the right to suspend the board in the event he is satisfied that the board is not in a position to fulfil its functions. However, the Lahore cricket association has challenged the suspension, which occured on July 17.

In its petition, the Lahore association has asked the court to declare Tarar's action illegal, and to reinstate the board.

Tarar is not likely to appear in person before the court, but will be represented by his lawyer.
