Mahanama announces retirement

Sri Lankan batsman Roshan Mahanama today announced his decision to retire from international cricket, few hours after the selection committee dropped him from the forthcoming triangular one-day and Test series.

State radio reported that Mahanama has written a letter to the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka conveying his decision.

The selection committee had yesterday announced two separate squads for the one-day triangular and Test series and Mahanama's name was not in either of the squads.

Batsman Hashan Tilakratne was also ignored by the selectors.

The selection committee, while dropping former captain Arjuna Ranatunga and vice-captain Aravinda de Silva from the one-day team, retained them for the Test series.

A cricket board official confirmed receipt of Mahanama's letter, but declined to comment further.

Meanwhile, the Australian embassy has said the country's team will be arriving in Colombo on August 16. The team will be given special security in view of the suicide bomb killing of TULF parlaimentarian Neelan Thiruchelvam last week.
