Border exhorts Tendulkar

Former Australia cricket captain Allan Border has advised newly-appointed India captain Sachin Tendulkar to "leave his reluctance lock, stock and barrel behind and pour all his energy into the new job".

In an interview to Mid-day website, Border, who transformed from a reluctant captain to a highly successful player, winning the 1987 World Cup, said Tendulkar should not be like him (Border) and must look at his assignment as part of the continuing education as a cricketer.

''I took a long time because I was undecided first, and it took me a long time to be at the top,'' he revealed.

Border admitted that Tendulkar carried a big burden as the team's main batsman, but he was certain that "being a great player he would have matured to take up the challenge".

He felt that the time required for a captain to settle down depended on his character. "If you are a long time player, like Mark Taylor, then you take up the job in a relaxed manner. Same applies to Tendulkar, who has now finished a decade of international cricket. Now Tendulkar must have formulated ideas which were not there when he first became captain," Border said, adding "now he must get the players around him, work with selectors and gain everybody's confidence."
