Azhar to lead in Dhaka, Sharjah

The Indian cricket teams for the Wills International Cup in Dhaka (October 24-November 1), and the Coca Cola Cup in Sharjah (November 7-13), will be led by Mohammad Azharuddin.

BCCI secretary J Y Lele and chairman of selectors Ajit Wadekar told mediapersons in Ahmedabad that jointly announced the decision and said it was arrived at in a "half-minute" meeting of the selection committee.

In reply to a question, Wadekar said the choice was unanimous, and "just a formality". The vice captain for both tours will be announced later, Lele added.

Regarding the non-arrival till date of Sachin Tendulkar at Ahmedabad, to participate in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy series, Lele said he had sought time to rest. Meanwhile, India B skipper Saurav Ganguly is "being chased", Lele added.

The Sharjah tournament has India, Sri Lanka and New Zealand vying for top honours, and Indian coach Anshuman Gaekwad is listed as one of the beneficiaries.
