Dhanraj to carry Indian flag at Bangkok

Veteran forward and captain of the hockey team Dhanraj Pillay will have the honour of carrying the Indian tricolour at the opening ceremony of the 13th Asian games at Bangkok on December 6.

Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi said that several names, including that of P T Usha and Leander Paes, were considered but it was decided that Dhanraj Pillay will be the flagbearer of the Indian contingent.

He said Usha and Paes will not be present on the opening day of the ceremony, so the choice fell on Dhanraj Pillay, for whom this will be the third time he is participating in the Asian games.

Kalmadi was of the view that Dhanraj deserves this honour as he has served the cause of Indian hockey for over a decade.
