Srinath may miss Sharjah tour

Strike bowler Javagal Srinath, who was dropped from the Indian team on fitness grounds late on Wednesday night, may also miss the three-nation Sharjah tournament to be held from April 17 to 24.

Srinath, who was rested in the final Test against Australia at Bangalore due to the recurrence of his shoulder problem, will have to submit a fitness certificate before the Indian team is named for the Sharjah tour on April 7 at Kanpur, Kishan Rungta, chairman of the selection committee, told United News of India in Bombay on Thursday.

"If Srinath cannot make it, India may miss two stars at Sharjah. Allrounder Robin Singh, whose left hand was injured during net practice at Kochi is also unlikely to make the trip," he said.

Besides India, the Sharjah tournament will involve Australia and New Zealand.

Rungta said only two changes were originally made in the Indian team on Wednesday by the three selectors present at Kochi -- Sambaran Banerjee, Ajit Wadekar and Shivlal Yadav -- after discussions with skipper Mohammed Azharuddin and coach Anshuman Gaekwad. Navjot Singh Sidhu and Robin Singh were dropped to make way for Saurav Ganguly and Venkatesh Prasad.

Rungta said Srinath, who could not bowl at his usual pace in Wednesday's game, informed the team management of his condition after the team was announced.
