In the worst air crash in India in the last decade, an Air India flight from Dubai overshot the runway and crashed near the Mangalore airport on Saturday morning, killing 158 passengers.

Air India on Sunday said that 87 bodies have been handed over to the family members and relatives of the passengers who died in the Mangalore plane crash. All the 158 bodies have been recovered from the crash site, Air India spokesperson Harpreet Singh De said.

Search teams at the site are still looking for the Cockpit Voice Recorder or the black box which may reveal the reason behind the crash.

A member of the Karnataka police team, which is carrying out search operations at the crash site, said that the massive wreckage of the ill-fated plane has to be cleared before looking for the black box.

The preliminary finding of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation suggests that the pilot's error could have caused the crash.

A team of experts have arrived in Mangalore on Sunday morning from Hyderabad to conduct DNA tests to help in identification of bodies charred beyond recognition in the plane crash
