Here is a Ganesha from Umanagar, Begumpet, Hyderabad. The photograph has been sent by Sanghamitra Malik.

Here is her special tale: "I am writing to you from Pinnacle Towers Owners' Association, an apartment building situated in Umanagar, Begumpet. We started Vinayak Chaturthi celebrations in 2002. And 2009 was our eighth year.

"Since 2007, we have introduced an eco-friendly clay Ganesha made by artisans from Bengal -- Sukumar Pal and Nemai Das. They resemble the human anatomy and are built over a frame of bamboo and straw, with the final layers of clay applied in stages. The clay ultimately represents human flesh. The structure is then dried and a final coating of clay is given to fill up cracks and fine tune the features. On completing the clay structure, the figure is painted with natural colours. The eyes are then painted and other detailing is done. The hair, made of jute, is glued and then hel is dressed and ornamented. Our Ganesha is less than three feet in height.

"All residents and their family members, irrespective of caste, community and religion, take active part in the five days celebrations. Ladies contribute prasadh on a daily basis. Some monetary contributions are made by residents to tide over the basic expenditures.Children take part in short cultural programmes every evening after the puja is over. Residents make it a point to attend, despite leading today's fast and busy lives. Prasadh is taken together. The immediate neighbours, as well as some others, staying closeby, are invited to attend. Our security staff and other helping hands also enjoy the celebrations along with us.
