Trinamool Congress leader Arabul Islam, accused of throwing a jug at a lady professor, on Monday surrendered before a district court which granted him bail.

Islam and his son Hakibul surrendered after Debjani De, the professor of Bhangar Mahavidyalaya, in South 24 Parganas along with some of her colleagues filed a complaint of assault against the duo.

Arabul and Hakibul surrendered at the court in South 24 Parganas district, which granted them bail on personal bonds of Rs 1,000 each as their offences were bailable.

Debjani had alleged that Arabul, the president of the college governing body and a former MLA, hurled a jug at her on April 23 during a meeting, causing injuries on her chin, and also accused him of threatening her. The professor and her colleagues had also called on West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan over the weekend.

The issue had acquired political overtones with Arabul claiming that the professor was a "hardcore CPI-M supporter".

Coming out in support of Arabul, Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee had produced a tenant of a house owned by the professor who alleged before reporters that he was harassed by the professor.

Trinamool Congress student wing chief Shankudev Panda's reported diktat to college teachers not to support the Communist Party of India-Marxist had added grist to the mill.
