With high levels of radioactive substances being detected in seawater near a quake-crippled nuclear power plant in Japan, International Atomic Energy Agency on Tuesday said Japanese authorities will measure the radioactivity, results of which will be provided on Thursday.

"Japanese authorities have reported that they will measure radioactivity in the marine environment around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The monitoring will be conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday by the Japan Agency for Marine- Earth Science and Technology," IAEA said in its update on the situation in Japan.

The international agency said seawater sampling from eight locations will be sampled and analysed by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, and results will be provided on Friday. The analysis will include radionuclide concentrations found in seawater and dose rate.

"The IAEA will continue to follow this information," the update said.
