All Indians in tsunami-hit Japan are safe and India will extend all assistance to help the people of Japan in its hour of crisis, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said on Monday.

"I spoke to the ambassador there. The ambassador told me that all the 25,000 Indians in Japan -- most of them are in and around Tokyo -- they are all safe and he is in touch with the Indian community," Krishna told reporters outside Parliament.

He said the embassy will "do whatever is possible" to help the Indians and a helpline has been set up there. "They are free to contact the Indian embassy for assistance," he said.

Asked about the Indians stranded in the affected areas, Krishna said, "All of them have established communication with our embassy. And all of them are safe."

Asked about India's assistance to Japan, Krishna said India has sent a plane-load of blankets to Japan and India's ambassador, who is in touch with the Japanese government, is "trying to find out what India can do."

"Whatever assistance that India is capable of and which would help the people of Japan in the hour of crisis, it would be done," Krishna added.
