A 15-year-old Australian boy is set to be sentenced for murder over Indian accountancy graduate Nitin Garg's fatal stabbing in Melbourne last year.

Twenty-one-year-old Garg was stabbed to death in Cruikshank Park, Yarraville, in January 2010. He was walking to his place of work at Hungry Jack's when the teenager and a friend approached him and demanded that he hand over his phone.

The boy, who cannot be named, had earlier pleaded guilty before the Supreme Court to charges of murder and attempted armed robbery. The court had heard that the teenager had a knife in his pants, and when Garg refused to hand over his phone, he was stabbed.

The teen will become one of the youngest people in Victoria to be sentenced for murder, The Age reports. His friend was sentenced to 18 months probation last year after agreeing to testify against the murderer.

Garg's murder sparked off an extraordinary outcry, with claims that Indian students in Australia were being targeted in racial attacks. It led to protests in both Melbourne and Sydney.
