Two army officers, including a Major, were charred to death and four jawans injured when a bunker caught fire in Siachen area of frontier Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Major Gurphej Singh and Lieutenant Archit Verdiya died when their fibreglass bunker at Ashok post, located at 19,000 feet, caught fire late on Thursday night, a defence spokesman said.

The spokesman said the cause of the fire was not yet known. A court of inquiry has been constituted to probe the incident, he said.

Four other jawans, who tried to rescue the officers, sustained burn injuries. While Singh hailed from Kapurthala in Punjab, Verdiya was from Udaipur in Rajashthan.

This is second fire incident in five years in Siachen -- the highest battlefield in the world which has been peaceful since 2003 following a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.

A major and a captain were killed in a similar fire incident in 2006.
