Holding "one leader one family" centric politics responsible for the increasing corruption in the country, Bharatiya Janata Party's former national president Rajnath Singh on Thursday said that unless such political parties are rejected by the people, corruption cannot be controlled.

"Unless one leader one family centric politics ends, an effective check on corruption is not possible," Singh said in an interview with PTI on the existing reverberation in the country's politics over the demand for a strong Lokpal Bill.

He said the BJP was in the favour of a strong Lokpal as it would certainly check corruption at the top levels of government.

"But an effective check would not be possible till the domination of one leader one family centric politics ends. For this, besides creating awareness among people, there is a need to amend the People's Representation Act," Singh said.

Without naming any political party, he said one can easily observe that with the increasing dominance of 'one leader one family centric' political parties in the country and in various states, the magnitude of corruption and number of scams has increased.

"Otherwise no one could have thought of a scam of Rs 1.75 lakh crore in the 2G spectrum case," he said.

Singh alleged that except BJP, the Janata Dal - United and up to an extent the Left parties, autocracy prevailed in almost all political parties. But internal democracy within the parties was important to check corruption, he said.

On being asked about reports of corruption from BJP-ruled states, he said, "I am not giving a clean chit to anyone. But those saying such things must show that against which existing or former BJP chief minister a CBI inquiry into disproportionate assets case is being carried out."

On former BJP national president Bangaru Laxman being caught taking bribe on camera, Singh claimed that though it was a 'conspiracy', the BJP leader had resigned on moral grounds.

On the BJP's claim of being a party with a difference, Singh said, "This is because in the BJP, even a common worker can become the national president, whereas in other parties counting ends from where it starts. This is not a minor difference."

Referring to reports of internal bickering among BJP leaders, he said, "There is nothing like this, we are all united on our policies and issues."
