The Centre has not sought the resignation of Puducherry Lieutenant  Governor Iqbal Singh, who had recently come under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate over his recommendation for issuing passport expeditiously to alleged money launderer Hasan Ali Khan, his office said on Thursday.

"There is no communication from the Centre to Lt Governor Dr Iqbal Singh to demit office and reports appearing in a section of the press that instructions had been issued lieutenant governor to relinquish office are not true. The reports have appeared without ascertaining the fact," J P Singh, officer on special duty to lieutenant governor, said in a statement.

He said reports that Singh has been directed to demit office were not true and had been published without ascertaining the facts.

"The lieutenant governor has not received any information or communication whatsoever to demit office," JP Singh said.

Dr Iqbal Singh was in the eye of a storm for recommending, as a Congress Rajya Sabha member in 1997, expeditious issue of passport to Khan, a Pune-based stud farm owner, facing charges of tax evasion and money laundering.

He had explained that his recommendation for expeditious issue of passport to Khan was based on humanitarian grounds because he had been told that the stud farm owner needed to travel abroad urgently to visit his ailing brother.
