Several members of Parliament, cutting across party lines, on Friday sought permission for use of beacons atop their vehicles.
A number of MPs from various political parties presented a memorandum in this regard to the chairman of the privileges committee, reiterating their rights and privileges as lawmakers.
The members said they be permitted the use of red light atop their vehicles all over the country as they were not allowed the use of beacons on their vehicles in Delhi. Many of them had been penalised for use of beacon on vehicles in Delhi, they pointed out.
Yashvir Singh, an MP from Uttar Pradesh, said though they were permitted the use of beacons on their vehicles in their own state, they were not allowed its use in the national capital.
"Even smaller officers use red light but we are not allowed even though we represent about 30 lakh voters," one MP said. They also pointed out that MPs figured at number 21 in the protocol list while their status was much higher and they be upgraded. MPs also sought separate lines for them at toll barriers across the country.
"Officials of the state and central governments figure higher than MPs in the protocol list," said Congress MP Avtar Singh Bhadana.
