Imphal school students nab militant

September 02, 2010 17:45 IST

Students of the Ananda Singh Higher Secondary School in Imphal have nabbed a militant who was trying to extort money from their principal.

The extortionist, said to be a cadre of the hardcore Kangleipak Communist Party (Noyon), dashed into the room of the principal and demanded that she should collect Rs 5000 each as tax from every teacher in the school as was discussed by them earlier.

The principal denied receiving any such demands and had an argument with the rebel. Hearing the commotion, staff and students rushed to the spot and caught the miscreant at the toilet centre.  Principal T Pramodini Devi said the rebel was beaten by the students and handed over to the district police station. The police authorities praised the students'' brave efforts.

"We appreciate students a lot for coming forward without fear, and I hope that in near future also, they will not be afraid to come out against this type of extortion," said Rajen Singh, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Imphal East Police Station.
