At least 35 people have been killed after their boat capsized on Sunday night in the river Ganga in Bihar's Buxar district.

The vessel, with about 80 people on board, turned over in the fast-flowing water, a district police officer said.

"The tragedy seems to be result of overloading of the boat, which did not have the capacity to carry more than 25 people," he said.

Police officials in Buxar told rediff.com that rescuers have recovered 35 bodies. A search operation was on till reports last came in.

He said that among the dead were women and children as well.

According to official sources, more than 25 people managed to swim to safety.

The Bihar government has ordered a probe into the mishap and announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each to the kin of victims.
