B K Gupta, an IPS officer of 1975 batch, will take over from Y S Dadwal as the next police commissioner of Delhi.

Dadwal had asked for transfer from his present position following completion of his three-year tenure, but was asked by the home ministry to stay on till the end of the Commonwealth Games.

Gupta would take over from Dadwal on November 9, a source told rediff.com on Wednesday.

As deputy commissioner of New Delhi range, Gupta was instrumental in saving Bangla Sahib Gurdwara during the anti-Sikh riots in 1984.

As deputy commissioner,
he has served in the Special Protection Group.

His appointment as deputy commissioner in charge of crime and Railways was seen by many of his colleagues as the beginning of his career. He was decorated by the President's police medal twice.

Under his guidance, the Delhi Police special cell was able to crack the 1997 serial bomb blasts case when the investigating team liquidated a module.

He has also served as Inspector General of Police in Mizoram for a term before moving back to Delhi. Currently, he is posted as director general (prisons) with his office located in Tihar jail compound.
