According to Dilip Gore, a senior police inspector at the Kurla railway police station, personnel of the 6th Assam regiment had left from Guwahati on Wednesday along with 75 bullets and some electrical devices."On Friday, soon after the train had reached the station, it was discovered that the Army's ammunition was missing from the luggage compartment. From Kurla, the regiment personnel were to head to an ordnance factory in Pune for testing the bullets and electrical devices," Gore said."The toilet roof of the adjacent compartment and partition of the luggae compartment was ripped apart. The thieves did not touch any other luggage except the ammunition kept inside the trunks."
Police is not ruling out the role of Naxals in the crime as the train passes through Maoists-hit areas including Chhattisgarh.
