The Delhi police stepped up vigil against the backdrop of several countries including the US and Australia issuing alerts about "imminent" terror strikes in the city.

More policemen were deployed on the streets as soon as the advisories were issued besides enhancing security presence in crowded places like shopping malls, cinema halls, markets and transport infrastructure.

Highly placed government sources told PTI that the advisories are being taken "seriously" and Delhi Police has been asked to be on "full alert".

Delhi police chief Y S Dadwal said he had issued the highest level of alert in the city, particularly at the leading business centres including Chandani Chowk, Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar.

"Yes, we have issued the highest level of alert in Delhi," Delhi police Public Relation Officer Rajan Bhagat said, and added that the alert would be on for a few more days.

"The Delhi police is aware of the advisory issued by the US embassy that there are increased indication that terrorist attacks are imminent in New Delhi. The Delhi police is taking appropriate measures in this regard," Bhagat said.

He also appealed to public to be vigilant and fully cooperate with police and inform the nearest police station or toll free number 1090 on noticing any suspicious object, person or vehicle. The identity of the informant will be kept secret, he said.

The appeal comes against the backdrop of the US, UK and Australia issuing fresh advisories, warning of "imminent" terror attacks in New Delhi, particularly in market places like Connaught Place, Greater Kailash and Chandni Chowk, which are "attractive targets" for terrorist groups.

Seven companies of the Central Reserve Police Force have been deployed to guard the Delhi metro railway.

"Our men are on look out for terrorists that may have sneaked in the capital," Bhagat said.

Special teams have been formed and raids are being conducted to flush out the suspects.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is reportedly taking stock of the situation on an hourly basis.
