March 21, 2010 15:49 IST

Maintaining that there is improvement in overall security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir, state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that over 500 terrorists are still operating in the state.

"There are approximately 550-575 terrorists presently active in Jammu and Kashmir and the security situation is under control," Abdullah told media persons on Sunday.

However, he said cross-border infiltration is a worrying aspect and net infiltration has increased by over 98 per cent in 2009 as compared to 2008.

"There are inputs indicating that many more trained terrorists are awaiting across LoC at different launching pads for infiltration into our own side," he added.

As far as security situation is concerned, there has been improvement in past two years and the state saw a 30 per cent decline in terrorists-related incidents, he said.

Against 708 terrorists related incidents in which 91 civilians, 85 security personnel and 339 militants were killed in 2008, the year 2009 registered only 499 incidents in which 239 militants, 71 civilians and 79 security personnel were killed.
