The BSF on Monday withdrew one of its observation posts near Muktapur in Meghalaya amid reports of troop mobilisation by BDR along the border, a day after heavy firing was reported between the border guards of the two countries.

The BSF deployed at the Noljuri Observation Post near Muktapur have been withdrawn following instructions from its headquarters, BSF sources said, but refused to disclose the reason behind the move.

Residents of the Noljuri village have also abandoned their houses following the BSF move, local people said.

Some Bangladeshi villages across the border have been evacuated and "armed personnel" have been reinforced in the areas opposite the border in Muktapur, BSF guards monitoring the developments said.

In Shillong, Chief Minister D D Lapang said he has asked senior Congress MLA Lakhmen Rymbui, who is in New Delhi, to take up the matter with the Union Home Ministry.

"The firing is unfortunate. It has happened despite Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's promise to look into the issue after I took it up during my visit last month," Lapang said.

He said he would visit the national capital on March 17 to take up the matter personally with the Centre.
