June 24, 2010 16:47 IST

Immigration officials at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport detained mine owner and Karnataka MLA Santosh Lad on Thursday morning while he was on his way to Dubai. Lad, who represents the Kalaghatgi constituency in Dharwad, was wanted by the Delhi Police in connection with a cheating case.

A real estate company operating in the national capital region had filed a case of cheating against Lad. A Look Out Circular (LOC) had also been issued in Lad's name. Lad informed immigration officials that he was aware of the case against him in Delhi, and maintained that he was in touch with the investigation officer and trying to arrive at a compromise with the complainant.

According sources, the Delhi Police have been informed about Lad's detention and a team is expected to land in Mumbai to take Lad into its custody. Lad's elder brother Anil is a Rajya Sabha member. The Lad brothers came to limelight when they played a key role in pulling down the Janata Dal-Secular–Congress coalition government led by Dharam Singh and installed the JD-S–Bharatiya Janata Party government led by HD Kumarswamy in Karnataka in 2006.
