Maharashtra government has decided to continue with Ujjwal Nikam as the special public prosecutor in 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab's case which would soon come up before the Bombay high court for confirmation of the Pakistani national's death sentence.

Nikam had represented the prosecution in a special 26/11 court which on May 3 sentenced the terrorist to death for his involvement in the terror attack.

Later, Kasab approached the Bombay high court with an appeal challenging the death sentence. The gunman would now be defended by lawyers Amin Solkar and Farhana Shah.

"We have decided to continue with Nikam as special public prosecutor in Kasab's case which would soon come up before the high court," Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Chandra Iyengar said.

Earlier, Nikam had worked as the special public prosecutor in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, Khairlanji Dalit family killing and murder case of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan.
