"I have never said I will continue backing the Maoists' armed struggle even if I am put behind bars. Neither did I say I defend killings by any side."

That was writer-activist Arundhati Roy reacting to some of the reports appeared in a section of the media after her widely reported speech on 'War on People' in Mumbai last fortnight.

The Booker Prize-winning author has accused some media organisations of widely misrepresenting her speech.

In an e-mailed statement to Rediff.com, she said, "The Mumbai speech was strangely filed by Press Trust of India a day after many newspapers, TV channels and Rediff.com published what was actually said. And many newspapers and TV channels whose reporters were there and knew the PTI report to be false, republished the concocted version."

Roy also said contrary to the agency report, she did not say "she was not there to defend killing by any side".

She said the Maoists were the most militant end of a spectrum of resistance movements all of who are protesting corporate landgrabbing, and that the government deals with all of them with antagonism and repression.

She did not say that she will continue to back the Maoists' armed struggle even if she is "put behind bars". Neither did she call upon the government to put her in jail for supporting the Maoists, nor did she offer support to the Maoists.
