South African President Jacob Zuma invited Congress President Sonia Gandhi to visit his country to watch the football World Cup that kicks off in Johannesburg on June 11. This was conveyed to Gandhi who made a courtesy call on Zuma. The South African leader is on a three-day official visit to India.
"Zuma has invited Mrs Gandhi to watch the FIFA World Cup," Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, who was present during the meeting told PTI. Gandhi conveyed her best wishes for smooth conduct of the mega football event.
Sharma said the South African President has also invited Gandhi for a visit in 2012 when his African National Congress completes 100 years.
