Rahul makes unscheduled visit to Chennai

June 02, 2010 20:16 IST
Taking local police and security guards by surprise, All India Congress Committee general secretary Rahul Gandhi today made a surprise visit here to take part in a party function.

Making an unannounced visit, Gandhi arrived in Chennai by a scheduled private flight at 1:50 pm to take part in a youth Congress training session on the city outskirts as part of his efforts to strengthen the party at the grassroots, officials said.

Even the airport police were not informed of the visit, airport officials said.

Without any formal reception at the airport, Gandhi got into a bulletproof car, kept ready inside the airport and left for Thangavel College of Engineering at Thuraipakkam with Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K V Thangkabalu.

During the training session, he asked the party cadre to work hard and reach out to the people so that more youths come to the organisation fold, party sources said.

He said posts would be suitably given to those who work responsibly for the party's growth in their respective region.

After interacting with the office bearers, the Congress leader left for Delhi. During September last, Gandhi had made a three-day visit to the state as part of Congress' efforts to strengthen the party.
