It's Modi's turn to face questions: Congress

July 25, 2010 18:00 IST

Targeting Narendra Modi after his close aide Amit Shah's arrest in a fake encounter case, the Congress on Sunday said the Gujarat chief minister should be prepared to face some 'uncomfortable' questions in the probe.

The party claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party was 'nervous' about the developments in the Supreme Court-monitored probe in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case and was using pressure tactics to block the probe.

"Shah was only a minister of state for home and MoS can transfer Indian Police Service officers. The transfers of many IPS officers in the state were made by Narendra Modi. It is our understanding that these uncomfortable questions will be asked of Modi and he will have to answer them," Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed said.

"The BJP is nervous and afraid that the investigation may go beyond Amit Shah and it is using pressure tactics to block further investigation into the case," Ahmed said.

The CBI on Sunday arrested Amit Shah in connection with the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case after he appeared before the agency for questioning in Ahmedabad.

Meanwhile, Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi attacked the BJP for questioning the role of the CBI in the case.

"Do you think the CBI is full of a bunch of fools who will risk their entire career by making false allegations, non-existing allegations which are going to be examined by the Supreme Court," Singhvi asked.

Ahmed said the law will take its own course into the matter and termed it as "unfortunate that the BJP is trying to defend a cold blooded murder (of Sohrabuddin)".

"The CBI has ample evidence against Shah," he said.

The Congress spokesman said the former Gujarat home minister had no option but to appear before the CBI as there was no possibility of any court in the country granting him an anticipatory bail in the case, whose investigation is being monitored by the Supreme Court.
