The Indian Consulate celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Republic Day in New York with much fanfare.

Prominent members of the Indian American community cut a cake to mark the occasion, and Consulate General Prabhu Dayal addressed the audience. He hailed the Indian American community as the 'pride of India.'

Vijay Nambiar, chief of staff of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, regaled the audience by stating that common people like a washerman or a call centre employee should also be awarded the Bharat Ratna, for their 'regularity and honesty.'
