Defence Minister AK Antony on Tuesday called for enhanced vigil along the borders while admitting that 2009 had witnessed more infiltration attempts than the year before.
Antony arrived in winter capital Jammu on Tuesday on a days visit to review the situation in the wake of sudden spurt in violence and attended the unified headquarters meeting chaired by state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Tuesday's meeting was also attended by Army Chief Deepak Kapoor and other senior army, paramilitary, intelligence, police and civil officers.
Addressing the meeting, the defence minister 'stressed on enhancing vigilance on the borders and Line of Control (LoC) keeping in view the increased attempts of infiltration in 2009 as compared to 2008.'
The defence minister while complementing the state police and security forces for 'efficiently handling Lal Chowk incident' said that, 'in future also such incidents should be handled with same efficiency.'
He informed that the army had vacated all hospitals and school buildings in the state.
The defence minister also said that 'some outside forces inimical to the country are making several attempts to infiltrate borders, therefore, there is need to heighten vigilance'.
State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said 'standard operating procedures (SOP) should be followed while dealing with law and order and militancy related incidents.'
He said that 'synergy existing between various security forces needs to be further strengthened'.
The chief minister as well as defence minister reiterated the government's commitment to zero tolerance of human rights violation.
