A sub inspector of the Meghalaya police was suspended on Tuesday on the charge of dereliction of duty in connection with the escape of three Pakistani terrorists from New Delhi.

D M Singh, who was escorting the terrorists on their return from a hospital, has been put under suspension for "dereliction of duty" and a departmental inquiry initiated against him," a senior official of the India Reserve Battallion of Meghalaya police said.

Abdul Razzak, Mohammed Sadiq and Rafaqat Ali, arrested in connection with blasts near the Red Fort nine years ago, escaped from a restaurant in Kotwali police station area on Friday last week before they could be deported to Pakistan.

Singh alone had taken the trio for a medical check-up at Guru Nanak Eye Hospital and later while returning to Sewa Dham, a transit camp in Narela for those to be deported to Pakistan, he took them to a restaurant near Jama Masjid from where they managed to escape.

"There are certain norms set for escorting inmates of transit camp and Singh had violated them by taking out those three terrorists alone. There should have been a proper security escort with them", the official said.

Sources in Delhi police said a preliminary probe into the escape of the three terrorists also found that there was "dereliction of duty" on the part of Singh as he took out the three terrorists alone and later took them to a restaurant.

Officials of the Special Cell, which is investigating the case, had questioned Singh after the escape of the three terrorists from his custody.

"His (Singh's) connivance in the escape of the terrorists has not yet been established. However, investigation is on," sources said.
