Assam: Six students feared killed in boat tragedy

Six students, all from a group of New year's day revelers were feared drowned after the boats carrying them capsized in the mighty Brahmaputra River in Kamrup district of Assam on Friday evening.

Police informed that six students including four girls and two boys, of the group of picnickers went missing after the boat capsized. A senior district official informed that 11 members of the group could be rescued till the operation had to be called off for the night, only to be resumed on Saturday morning.

Police informed that the tragedy occurred when 15 students of Banghsor Higher Secondary School, all of them residents of Gandhamou area of Kamrup district, were returning from a picnic party on a large sandbar in the bosom of Brahmaputra river near Rakhakhini isle.

They had hired two country boats to go to the picnic spot on the sandbar.While coming back, the entire group,including two boatmen, which was travelling in a single boat capsized in the river midway.
