Gujarat: Headley-surveyed places under scanner

February 18, 2010 13:01 IST

In the wake of the Pune blast, the Gujarat police is keeping a close watch over all the places in the state which US terror suspect David Headley's accomplice had visited in November 2008.

Asked about steps taken by the state police following the Pune incident, DGP S S Khandwawala has said, "All necessary steps have been taken to ensure security of the people statewide."

He said the police was maintaining a vigil over the places where Headely's Canadian accomplice Tahawwur Hussain Rana and his wife Samraz Akhtarhad had visited.

"We are keeping a tab on all places which Headley's aide (Rana) may have visited and are tracking activities there," he said yesterday.

Khandwawala said that following the nation-wide alert after the Pune blast, security has been beefed up in Gujarat. As a result, a large cache of explosives were seized from Vapi and Surendranagar districts, he added.

Rana, arrested by FBI along with Headley for involvement in an LeT plot to carry out attacks in India, had stayed at a hotel here in 2008. He was accompanied by his wife during his visit to the city.
