Former Punjab Police Director General of Police Julio F Riberio moved the Supreme Court on Friday, alleging inaction on the part of the government to take steps for bringing back black money stashed in foreign banks.

A bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan tagged his petition along with the one filed by eminent jurist Ram Jethmalani and others who had filed a PIL on the same issue before the last general elections. Advocate Meenakshi Arora, appearing for Riberio, who was also former Mumbai police commissioner, alleged that despite news reports appearing with some names, the government had not taken steps to take action against those persons. After intitial questioning about the data secured by the petitioner, the bench said since a similar matter is pending before it and notices have already been issued it would hear both the petitions together.

A PIL filed by Jethmalanai and five others, including former Punjab DGP K P S Gill and former secretary general of the Lok Sabha, Subhash Kashyap, have alleged the government was not taking action to bring back black money stashed in foreign banks. They have accused the Centre of showing a non-cooperative conduct by not supplying them vital documents which have a bearing on the issue of black money in foreign banks.
