Cong asks J&K PWD minister to step down

August 25, 2010 11:53 IST

The Congress has asked Jammu and Kashmir Public Works Department Minister G M Saroori to step down in the wake of the controversy surrounding his daughter, who is accused of using a girl to impersonate for her during a medical entrance exam.

"The party minister has been asked to resign", Congress general secretary Prithviraj Chavan told PTI.

It was alleged that two youth, including a girl, were appearing in the examination for the kin of two politicians -- Saroori and former minister Ram Pal of the National Conference, Congress' coalition partner in Jammu and Kashmir. Seven alleged impersonators, including a girl, were apprehended in this connection on August 21.

Vehemently denying any wrongdoing by his daughter, Saroori had dubbed it a "misinformation campaign" by vested interests to tarnish his image. He claimed his daughter Huma was pursuing her bachelor's degree in the Government Women's College, a fact which was being verified by the police.
