Alleging there was a "conspiracy by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to kill Mamata Banerjee after her Lalgarh rally, Trinamool Congress on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram seeking their intervention in the matter.

"There was an attempt to kill her. There has been a conspiracy by the CPI(M) again. There should be an inquiry," Trinamool Congress Secretary-General Partha Chatterjee  told reporters

He was referring to the accident when a car in Banerjee's convoy was hit by a truck, which in turn hit her car as she was returning from her Lalgarh rally on Monday night.

"I have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister P Chidambaram requesting them to rescue the state from lawlessness and the state administration's failure to provide proper security to Mamata," he said.

He said it did not matter whether Banerjee had Z-plus or Z category security. "The security arrangement for her should be effective," he demanded.

He alleged that the West Midnapore police withdrew the security accorded for Banerjee, the Union Railway Minister, while she was passing through the Jhitka jungle on her return journey.

"How is it that a truck entered her convoy? This is a serious security lapse," the Trinamool leader charged.

Justifying Banerjee's visit to Maoist-affected Lalgarh, he said she had risked her life to address a rally without the party banner and for establishing democracy.

Referring to the BJP and Left targeting the party for Banerjee's visit to Lalgarh, Chatterjee said, "In the absence of Banerjee in the House due to her illness, some political parties have launched an attack against her."
