At least six persons were killed and over 100 injured when a devastating thunderstorm powered by high-velocity wind lashed Assam at around late Saturday night.

Thousands of houses have been feared damaged while death toll may go up when the final report of damage will be available on Monday.

The administration is assessing damage in war footing even as the Met office in Guwahati has warned of another thunder squall within next 24 hours in the region.

A senior disaster management and revenue department official informed that the thunder squall left a trail of destruction all over the state. While thousands of houses were feared damaged, the power supply was totally disrupted all over the state after the storm had uprooted transmission towers and snapped high-tension power lines in many parts of the state.

A source in Assam State Electricity Board informed that it would take at least another 48 hours to restore normal power supply in the state while power supply could be restored partially in Guwahati city. In some of the areas electric transmission towers fell on rivers making restoration work extremely difficult.

The thunderstorm killed four persons in the Raha revenue circle of Nagaon district, a woman in Guwahati city and another person at Paglahat in Dhubri district. Over 100 were injured all over the state.

The devastating storm lasted for about 45 minutes. The worst affected districts included Kamrup (metropolitan), Kamrup (rural), Goalpara, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Baksa. At least 25 persons were injured in Guwahati city where uprooted trees and flying objects fell down on moving vehicles.
