Amid the US-led moves to impose fresh sanctions on Iran, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has made it clear to President Barack Obama that India was opposed to any sanctions that would target common people of that country.
The issue of Iran came up during the meeting Singh had with Obama and the two leaders agreed to remain in touch on it.
The US President briefed the Indian leader about the discussions on the possibility of the UN Security Council resolution on sanctions against Iran, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao told reporters while briefing on the 50-minute meeting.
Making known India's position, Singh noted that Iran has certain obligations to fulfil as a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty on the nuclear issue.
On the issue of sanctions, Singh told Obama that when these target ordinary people, those have "always been counter-productive".
Both leaders agreed to remain in touch on this issue and continue their discussions, Rao said.
