Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday promoted and rewarded a constable who on Sunday had killed a militant during an attack on the house of a senior Congress leader in the Rohama village of south Kashmir's Pulwama district.

"Constable Mushtaq Ahmad was today promoted to selection grade and was also given a cash award of Rs 10,000 for the bravery he exhibited during the attack on the house of Abdul Gani Dar, district president Congress," Kashmir inspector general of police Farooq Ahmad told rediff.com.

The police has also arrested another militant who was wounded in the shootout, and he is being treated in a local hospital in Srinagar.

The Congress leader and his family escaped unhurt in the attack.
