Over 100 Shiv Sena workers on Thursday staged demonstrations against Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa in Mumbai, protesting the "fraudulent" election of a Kannadiga mayor in Marathi-dominated Belgaum city.

The Sena members staged a protest at Gateway of India, adjacent to Taj hotel where the Karnataka CM was put up during his brief visit to the city for a business function.

The protesters shouted slogans against the Karnataka CM, demanding that Belgaum, along with Marathi speaking areas in that state, be merged with Maharashtra.

They opposed election of Ningappa Nirwani as mayor of Belgaum Municipal Corporation, alleging that nominations of
other corporators were rejected to pave way for the election of a "Kannadiga" as a mayor for the first time in Belgaum.

Four Sena legislators, including party's group leader in Assembly Subhash Desai, later met Yeddyurappa and submitted a memorandum.

"We told him Nirwani was elected fraudulently. He said he would convene an all-party meeting on the issue in Belgaum," Desai said.
