Maha polls: Advani star campaigner, Varun kept away

September 29, 2009 21:24 IST

The Bharatiya Janata Party in Maharashtra is set to deploy its top leaders for campaign for the October 13 assembly polls with senior party leader L K Advani and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi leading the charge.

"Advaniji would be the star campaigner of BJP and other national leaders Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, M Venkaiah Naidu and Arun Jaitley would also campaign," a BJP source said.

After the BJP lost the Lok Sabha elections this year, questions were raised about Modi's campaigns, blaming him for consolidating the Muslim votes in favour of the Congress.

However, the BJP has kept away controversial Member of Parliament Varun Gandhi from Maharashtra campaigns, fearing the Muslim consolidation in favour of rival the Congress-NCP alliance.

The chief ministers of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Karnataka, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Raman Singh and Y S Yeddiyurappa would also be coming for the campaign, the source said.

Celebrities like Shatrughan Sinha, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Hema Malini, Kirti Azad and Smriti Irani would address rallies in the state, the source said.
