Another moderate quake jolts northeast

A moderate-intensity earthquake shook Assam and some parts of the northeast early Tuesday, the second tremor in the region in as many days.

The quake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck at 1.09 am with the epicentre on Latitude 20.4 degrees north and Longitude 94.8 degree east. The epicentre of the quake was in Myanmar, the Regional Seismological Centre at Shillong said.

The tremor, which followed Monday's 6.7 magnitude quake with 21 aftershocks, rattled doors and windows of houses. People, already shaken by Monday's tremors, rushed outdoors.

No loss of life or property has been reported so far, official sources said.

Monday's shocks with their epicentre in Bhutan had killed 11 persons, some of them labourers from Assam, in Bhutan.

Two of the aftershocks measuring 4 to 4.5 on the Richter scale were felt in Bhutan and adjoining areas of Assam, the Seismological Centre said.

Though there were no reports of any casualty or injuries, two high-rise apartment buildings on the G S Road area had tilted and cracks had appeared in some other buildings and shopping complexes due to Monday's temblor.

Tuesday's moderate intensity quake was the fifth to rock the region in a month.
