October 30, 2009 23:50 IST

Mounting debt and crop failure drove a farmer to commit suicide at Lakhanwadi village near here, the police said.

Surendra Deshmukh, residing at Lakhanwadi village, had six acres of land and took a loan of Rs 25,000 from the Central Bank.

The crop failed due to lack of rain and a frustrated Deshmukh left his house on Tuesday afternoon. After some time, he contacted his wife on telephone and informed her that he was going to commit suicide.

The family immediately began a search for him and on Wednesday morning found his body near rail track. Deshmukh had committed suicide by consuming poison, the police said.
