J&K police arrest top Hizbul militant

October 24, 2009 22:16 IST

Tailing pro-Pakistani separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani helped the Jammu and Kashmir police in nabbing dreaded Hizbul Mujahideen militant Abdul Aziz Dar alias General Moosa from Srinagar on Saturday.

Dar, popularly known as General Moosa among separatists, had been on the run since last year, after he was found actively involved in anti-national agitations. He later allegedly indulged in liaising between Geelani and the Hizbul Mujahideen, sources said.

Arrested twice in the 1990s, when he was the divisional commander of the banned Hizbul Mujahideen, Dar was released by a local courts, after which he was suspected to be coordinating with Geelani and carrying out his orders, they said.

The sequence of events leading to Moosa's arrest began today afternoon, when Geelani was shadowed by policemen in plain clothes, the sources said.

They said the policemen became suspicious when Geelani decided to travel to Court Road in the city at an 'unusual' time. The separatist leader was followed by policemen who spotted a man emerging out of a shop.

One of the policemen identified him as Moosa, and the militant was immediately arrested, leaving Geelani dazed over the developments.

It was with Geelani's help that the police could nab the militant, a policeman said in a lighter vein.
