'Can't let micro events derail Sino-Indian ties'

October 20, 2009 09:24 IST

Janata paty chief Subramanian Swamy said that there was a possibility that India and China may get sucked into a serious border conflict by 'miscalculation and self fulfilling hype'.

Swamy was on a four-day visit to China, where he addressed the Asian African Development Research Institute of South Asian and Sino-Indian relations.

Swamy said that much of the hostility towards India in the Chinese media was seen in Communist party organs like the Peoples Daily and Global Times. This claimed to be a reaction to the Indian media's "false anti-China reporting". Swamy claimed that the Indian media based its perceptions on the frequent border incursions by the Chinese.

He called upon the leaders of both countries to use the 'hotline' before the Bengaluru meeting of the Brazil Russia Indian China group meeting. Swamy claimed that both countries had accepetd the fact that the border was an issue which needed to be negotiated and solved on the ground. Till such steps are taken , border incursions by both sides were inevitable.

"India and China will have to create a new global order as two very large and fast progressing countries. We should not allow ourselves to be derailed by micro events but be guided by macro and global perspectives in Sino-Indian relations, " Swamy said in a statement released to the media.

He urged Prime Minister Manmohan SIngh to speak 'frankly to Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiaobao in Bangalore next week on how the two nation could reduce the negative hype, and develop a strategic partnership with each other, especially against the common terrorist threat arising from the Taliban Pakistan and Afghanistan, and well as the fragility of the global financial architecture.
